The Trappist Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux at Vina, Tehama county, at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, is the only monastic vineyard and winery in North America. It is on the site of the vineyard and winery created by Leland Stanford in the 1880s as the largest in the world. I have written about New Clairvaux’s wines previously, but now the first Abbot's Reserve has been released. It is a blend of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Vina Syrah. Deeply colored with good varietal character, the label bears the coat of arms of Abbot Thomas Davis.
The Napa Valley Cabernet comes from the Nichelini vineyards since the winemaker, Aimée Sunseri, is of that family. This is a wine for aging, but is accessible now. It is a very happy marriage of the two varieties and areas.
