I wrote about the De Tierra wines, Merlot and Syrah several issues ago. Now I have just tasted the newest wine from De Tierra, a Monterey Pinot Noir of character and flavor. Since it is not grown around the winery, it was decided to call the wine Corral De Tierra, which is the name of the road facing the winery. Corral De Tierra Monterey Pinot Noir comes from the Silacci vineyard in Gonzales, an organic ranch of some 300 acres south of Salinas. Planted as an ungrafted vineyard, on its own roots, the planting material comes from the noted Pisoni vineyard. Tom Russell, the owner of De Tierra, a big grower of organic vegetables in Salinas, farms the vineyard with both Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni. Tom’s portion is vinified by his winemaker David Coventry at De Tierra. The Garys’ portion is sold to other wineries. This is a very good example of Monterey Pinot Noir. Dark, very fragrant, the wine’s flavor is the same as its fragrance, and the harmonious flavor shows off the fruit. The wine has enough backbone to last at least 5-8 years, but it is not a brooding monster. It is delicious now, needing only a bit of time to become smoother and richer. There were some 280 cases produced. Don’t dither about ordering.
