SACRAMENTO COOKIE a transplanted local specialty

The SACRAMENTO COOKIE is a filled, 7 inch round, thin wafer cookie made here in Sacramento. Originally created in 1856 in the Czech Republic's famed spa town of Carlsbad, or Karlov ry V ry, as a souvenir of the fact you had gone to "take the water," the wafers or "oplatky" became famous throughout Europe as Karlsbader Oblaten. Now, a similar cookie is made by a Sacramento resident Czech, Jiri Knedlik.

Produced since 1996, there are now three flavors available with three different designs: The original SACRAMENTO COOKIE has the State Capitol design and a hazelnut, cinnamon, vanilla filling. The SAN FRANCISCO COOKIE with a cable car design and mocha, chocolate, hazelnut filling and the CALIFORNIA COOKIE with the California Bear design, and a lemon, vanilla, almond filling round out the lineup.

Painstakingly handmade, they are delicious desserts in their own right; perfect with fresh fruit, they can also be used to make Pischinger torte--a recipe for this is on the box. Packaged 8 wafers to the box, these cookies are still an edible souvenir and treat, this time from Sacramento!

XSR 120 FINEST WHITE PORT AND SAVINO TAWNY two ports not to miss

We have just recently received another shipment of two ports which are Corti Brothers' exclusives: XSR120 and SAVINO TAWNY. Freshly bottled, these two wines will give tremendous pleasure. XSR120 is the lodge lot number for a very old Cockburn white port which is rarely sold. In fact, Corti Brothers is the only customer for it. It was found for us by Kevin Hamel, one of my former assistants, who was working at Cockburn's in Porto. We have offered the wine regularly since 1980.

XSR 120 is made in exactly the same way as red port--fermentation on the skins, fortification and then aging; it is a remarkable more than 30 year old wine. A rich, Sauternes-like color, unctuous body and aged fragrance make this an extraordinary dessert wine. It is so very silky and delicious that drinking it seems too easy. This is a unique, aged port to be drunk with dessert or as dessert.

SAVINO TAWNY is shipped under the Martinez Gassiot a Cockburn sister company label for us. It is a tawny that the shippers themselves drink. Miguel Corte Real, the Cockburn chief taster, wrote about the Savino: "Your own label SAVINO is a very special and small blend having as 'backbone' the MG 20 year old tawny, refreshed with the right proportion of younger and fruity wines. The idea is to make a reasonable old tawny (12 years old average) but well balanced, easy to drink and with a good percentage of what we like to call 'grip.' The size of the blend is approximately 2 pipes shared by SAVINO and...by our private Tawny, the port we have for ourselves and our guests." Good enough for them, good enough for us!

XSR 120 Finest White Port Wine $39.99 750ml
Savino Fine Tawny Port Wine $39.99 750ml
